A Day Trip to Millport: How to Get to Cumbrae and Things to Do

Ask anyone who grew up in the west of Scotland about Millport and you’ll usually get a smile. Bikes, ice cream, painted rocks and long summer days “doon the watter”. The good news is that the Isle of Cumbrae is just as easy to reach today, and it makes one of the best day trips from Glasgow.

Here’s our local guide to getting to Cumbrae and making the most of a day in Millport, from the people who make gin here.

How to Get to Millport from Glasgow

You don’t need a car. The journey is part of the fun, and it takes around an hour and a half door to door from Glasgow.

  1. Train to Largs: trains run from Glasgow Central to Largs, taking around 50 minutes to an hour. The ferry terminal is a short walk from Largs station.
  2. Ferry to Cumbrae: the CalMac ferry from Largs to Cumbrae Slip takes about 10 minutes, with regular sailings throughout the day. Check the CalMac website for the latest timetable, especially for your return sailing.
  3. Bus to Millport: the 320 bus, run by Millport Motors, connects the ferry slip with Millport and takes around 10–15 minutes. For the distillery, hop off at Garrison House, which is just a few minutes from our door.

You can also take a car on the ferry. A taxi service is available on the island too (01475 530666). Work is under way on a new ferry slipway and terminal at Cumbrae Slip, so it’s worth checking CalMac’s travel updates before you set off.

Cycle Round the Island

Hiring a bike and cycling round Cumbrae is a Millport tradition. The coast road is about 10 miles round, mostly flat and quiet, with views across the Firth of Clyde to Arran, Bute and the mainland. If you want a challenge, the hillier inner route climbs to the island’s highest point for a 360-degree view.

You’ll find bike hire in Millport at Mapes of Millport and On Your Bike. Bikes can be hired by the half day or full day, and there’s everything from tandems and trikes to bikes with child seats and trailers.

Fintry Bay, on the far side of the island, is the traditional halfway stop, with its tearoom and around four and a half miles left to pedal back to Millport.

Spot the Famous Rocks

Crocodile Rock, the painted rock on the shore at Millport, Isle of Cumbrae

No trip to Millport is complete without saying hello to Crocodile Rock, the painted rock on the shore that’s been a symbol of the island for over 100 years and a backdrop for generations of family photos. It’s the inspiration behind our Croc Rock Gin, made with cacao nib, orange and a ginger “bite”.

Then look out for Lion Rock, a natural rock formation with a legend all of its own, involving good elves, jealous goblins and a broken bridge to the mainland. Read the full tale behind our Lion Rock whisky.

Explore Millport Town

Millport stretches for nearly two miles along the bay, so it’s easy to explore on foot. Don’t miss:

  • The Cathedral of the Isles: said to be Britain’s smallest cathedral, designed by William Butterfield and consecrated in 1876. It’s tucked away among trees just above the town and is open daily.
  • Garrison House: once a garrison barracks, it was beautifully restored after a fire and is now home to the Museum of the Cumbraes and a café.
  • The Wedge: near the harbour, this little house claims to be the narrowest in Britain.
  • The beaches: sandy bays for paddling, rock-pooling and the obligatory ice cream on the front.

Finish with a Distillery Tour

Once the bikes are back, come and see us at the distillery at 11 Guildford Street. On our distillery tour you’ll hear the story of Isle of Cumbrae Distillers, of Millport, and of gin-making in Scotland, then taste two of our signature spirits. You’ll also take home a souvenir tasting glass. Tours are £25 per person.

We’d recommend booking ahead, especially in summer. Our shop is right here too, so you can take a bottle of the island home with you. The distillery is wheelchair accessible. If you have any access needs, get in touch and we’ll help you plan.

A quick tip: do your cycling before your tasting, not after! If you’re driving, make sure there’s a designated driver.

A Simple Day Trip Plan

  • Morning: train to Largs, ferry across, bus into Millport and pick up your bikes.
  • Late morning: cycle round the island, stopping at Fintry Bay for a cuppa.
  • Lunchtime: back in Millport for lunch and a wander along the front, saying hello to Crocodile Rock.
  • Afternoon: the Cathedral of the Isles and Garrison House, then a distillery tour.
  • Early evening: one last ice cream, then the bus and ferry home.
